D’Alembert Strategy: Principle, Practical Demonstration, and Review

When playing for the first time, people try to find strategies that will help them beat it. One of the most used and well-known roulette strategies in the world is also the d’Alembert system. In this article, we will introduce how the system works and what it is actually based on. Since the time when roulette games began.

The d’Alembert Strategy roulette

Strategy Principle

The whole principle of the strategy is that after each loss you increase your bet by one unit and as soon as you win you reduce your bet by one unit. You continue in this way until the time you set expires, after reaching the desired win or your bank is exhausted.

d'Alembert strategy principle Roulette

  • The main goal of this strategy is to limit losses during black streaks (losing streaks) and to make a profit during winning ones.
  • The D’Alembert strategy is based on the principle of balance. It is also much simpler and less risky than, for example, Martingale, which is why it is suitable for beginners or those who want to play safe. By definition, it is a negative progressive strategy.

Although the d’Alembert physical system can be confusing to some, the strategy derived from it is not so terrible. The strategy is only applied to even bets (red/black, even/odd, high/low 18), i.e. bets that have the same probability of winning and losing (50/50). It may not be effective for others. As with other strategies, it is first necessary to determine the value of one bet that you will play with. Be sure to also set a time period or limit that you are not willing to exceed.

The d’Alembert Strategy in Practice

To help you better understand how the d’Alembert strategy works, we’ve provided a detailed description with a table showing an example of how it works.

The d’Alembert Strategy in Practice Roulette

Preparation:

Bet: black color
Initial bet value: £1
Bankroll: £50
Number of rounds: 7

Example No. 1:

Round Bet Round result Bet result Profit
1. £1 Red 5  = Loss –£ –£1
2. £2 Green 0 = Loss –£2 –£3
3. £3 Red 23 = Loss –£3 –£6
4. £4 Black 17 = Win + £8  –£2
5. £3 Red 18 = Loss –£3 –£5
6. £4 Black 26 = Win +£8  –£1
7. £3 Black 6 = Win +£6  £2

In this case, it worked. Within your specified sequence, we were able to get a profit of £2  compared to the basic deposit. However, the result can be different every time. Just like winnings, losses can also come and we would not take anything away or we would lose.

Example No. 2:

In the second example, we will show what a negative profit could look like:

Round Bet Round Result Bet Result Profit
1. £1 Red 1 = Loss – £1 –£1
2. £2 Black 17 = Win + £4     £1
3. £1 Red 32 = Loss – £1    £0
4. £2 Red 15 =Loss – £2 –£2
5. £3 Red 3 = Loss – £3 –£5
6. £4 Black 10 = Win + £8  – £1
7. £3 Red 22 = Loss – £3 – £4

In this case, the last unlucky round was decisive, making the profit negative. However, it is still not such a big loss and the main thing in this strategy is to reduce it.

You can see from both examples that it is mainly about bankroll optimization. During a lucky streak, winnings grow, while during a bad streak, the bankroll does not suffer as much. We cannot say that this strategy will definitely bring us any profit. Everything depends only on chance.

Advantages and disadvantages of the strategy

  • Simplicity - the system is easy to understand and there is no need for complex calculations
  • Lower risk - unlike others, with this strategy the bets increase slowly and you avoid a lot of risk
  • Small wins - with repeated wins, the bet decreases, so you win less and less
  • Losing streak - during this streak, the bet keeps increasing and you can quickly get into the red

Is it worth using the d’Alembert strategy?

It mainly depends on what type of player you are and what you expect from the game. If you want to play smart and are looking for a system that you can stick to, d’Alembert will be ideal for you. With regard to the bankroll, it comes with a lower risk than other strategies and helps to effectively minimize losses.

From the other point of view, however, it cannot guarantee you a profit and everything depends only on whether you are lucky. However, this is the problem with most strategies. So if you get an extremely black streak, which is unlikely, but it can happen, you can lose practically your entire bankroll. It will just take much longer than with other strategies and you can change your mind in time.

  • However, if you are still afraid of losing, you can try the strategy on free online roulette, where you do not play for real money and do not risk anything.

Despite this, d’Alembert is a relatively effective strategy. You can take a closer look at other types of strategies in the articles below.

History of the strategy

d'Alembert Strategy

Not much is actually known about this strategy. We cannot even say clearly when and why this strategy began to be used in roulette. We only know that the system is named after the famous Enlightenment physicist and mathematician Jean le Rond d’Alembert. Specifically, after his important physical work, which is now known as d’Alembert’s principle.

In some sources, we read that d’Alembert himself used this strategy during the game and tried to beat the roulette wheel with it. However, this is probably just a myth. D’Alembert died 16 years before the first real game of roulette as a gambling game was supposed to take place.

The fact is that this system has been used in the gambling industry for many years and players are trying to use it to their advantage and get interesting winnings thanks to it.
